MIt radio society ham radio tower
massachusetts
project
Overview
In 2021, Structural Components was hired by the MIT Radio Society to design and fabricate small towers to be constructed on the rooftop of MIT Building 54, the tallest building on campus. The radio society is 111 years old with a rich history in ham radio and has the oldest college amateur radio station in the country. The antennas placed on the newly built towers are used in radio competitions with other universities across the country. The towers needed to be designed to allow students to lower and raise them with minimal effort in order to work on the antennas without climbing them. They also needed to be designed to fit within certain space requirements in both the lowered and raised position to be functional with the rest of the equipment on the rooftop. Structural Components worked in conjunction with the radio engineers and also the construction company that was in the process of re-building the roof to ensure all needs were met. The results were a huge success with both telescoping and tilt-over versions of the tower. This project is a great example of the unique design capabilities of the SC team!
